If you know me, you know this about me.I can't pass up a handsome dog.Or an ugly dog.Or a friendly dog.Or a rascally dog.Or a ... dog.I imagine every photographer has their method. Some are bandits, sneaking around the edges. Some are brawlers, pushing their way ahead. Some are charmers, beguiling their subjects. Some are stoics, just sitting and waiting for the right image to come to them.I don't quite have a set 'technique,' yet. But in general, I prefer some kind of interaction. A conversation where the camera is just another participant.Sitting stock-still, he balanced a potato chip on his nose while his minder put a finger-gun up to his chin. "Bang!" the man would say, and the dog would snap his head back and catch the chip in his mouth as fast as a lizard catches a fly.I thought the dog was focused primarily on the chip, but he stayed still after the first "Bang!" He looked back at me, as if to say, "OK, buddy - you ready?" toddcerverisphotography•I loved all the dogs we saw roaming the Navajo Nation (and we saw a lot). Mottled and patchwork, they looked like they stepped right out of the sandstone, made of red mesa and canyon cliff. Their eyes were set deep like hidden pools of water. Their haunches seemed carved out by shadows, their fur seemed bleached by the sun.They were lean, but they didn't seem to be starving. While rangy, they didn't seem abused. While cautious, they didn't seem frightened. They roamed the towns and its perimeters with the same kind of energy, curiosity, and pack mentality of high school boys on a weekend afternoon.We stopped for gas, and three of them came to see if we had any food to offer. We think they might have been a family, with a gentle but protective father always keeping himself between us and the youngest, and a mother who seemed the most willing to broker a donation.The sign on the front of the station said not to feed them.
